Juvia’s Place  is a brand that continues to amaze me with each and every new product they release. This is a Cosmetics Brand which caters specifically to darker skin tones, which is something the market has been sadly without until now.

Having been in the Beauty Industry off and on for some years now, I can sadly say that there have not been many offerings for those with darker skin tones. I’m not going to lie and say it was because of “poor demand,” because that isn’t the reason. The reason was that no one cared to create lines that were totally inclusive and instead, catered to lighter skin toned people.

My first job at a Cosmetics Counter was for a European company known for its skincare. We had very few color offerings available since that was not our main forte. The other counters sold circles around us in eyeshadows, lipsticks and mascaras. However, as I began to get to know my co-workers and learn about their brands ( because we all were required to know at least a little bit about every line in the department ), I noticed that there were little to none when it came to foundations in darker shades.

“Fashion Fair takes care of that,” I was told by the lady who co-managed the Fashion Fair and Elizabeth Arden Counter. She was correct; Fashion Fair had been the forerunner for darker skin toned beauties for some time, however, I still found it sad that there was literally only one line available. I asked my Coordinator why we didn’t have darker tones in our foundation and she said that people didn’t like them because they didn’t look good.

I didn’t understand what “didn’t look good” meant, so I partnered with a friend of mine who had vast knowledge of cosmetics for darker skin tones. She had been through a frustrating journey trying to find things that looked good on her and that didn’t wash her out or make her skin look off balance. Most of the foundations at various counters had too much “red” in them, she explained, and that could really throw off your look if you had cooler undertones.

Fast forward to now, and I’m glad to see that we have more inclusive lines on the market, including Juvia’s Place. This brand is made specifically with darker skin tones in mind. In fact, the founder tests pigments on her own skin to see which colors will pop and which won’t.

One of the newest and hottest products recently released by Juvia’s Place are their Loose Highlighters. carries this beautiful product in three shades: NubiaThe Royalty I and The Royalty II.

These are very luxurious pearlized bronzes and gold tones. You definitely only want to use a tiny bit, because a little goes a long way. The best way to apply is to gently add a small amount to your highlighter brush and blend until you get your desired glow. You can also use these wet, but I would use two brushes for this look. To create a more glowing look, add setting spray to a second brush and use while blending. I wouldn’t dip my wet brush into the container, though, because it might compromise the formula.
